WhatsApp is apparently working on a new feature that would allow users to read their contacts’ status changes through their profile photos. There is now a dedicated area within the WhatsApp app where you may check status updates. The ability to check a user’s state is expected to be expanded to the conversations area today, where users will be able to press on the profile image and see the contact’s status. This feature is still in the works and cannot be accessed even if users are on the most recent WhatsApp beta.
WhatsApp feature tracker According to WABetaInfo, this new functionality is in the works. It was discovered in the code of the most recent WhatsApp for Android beta version 126.96.36.199.
When a user touches a contact’s profile photo, WhatsApp displays an option window asking if they want to read the status update or the profile picture. Users can check the status of a specific person by clicking the status update option.
This is comparable to what Twitter achieved with Twitter Fleets.
There is no word on when this functionality will be available to WhatsApp users. It is currently in development and has not yet been made available for public beta testing. This implies that even those on the most recent beta will not be able to view this functionality.
