After the Edge 20 Fusion and the Edge 20, the Motorola Edge 20 Pro is the third smartphone to join the Edge line in India. The Edge 20 Pro, as its name indicates, is the top of the line in this series, and it will compete with phones like the OnePlus 9R. Motorola claims to have included strong hardware and believes that the stock Android experience it provides would entice consumers. I finally got my hands on this smartphone, and here are my initial thoughts on it.
- The display of the Motorola Edge 20 Pro features a 144Hz refresh rate.
- The Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 SoC powers it.
- It includes a triple camera system with a main sensor of 108 megapixels.
Price of Motorola Edge 20 pro in India
In India, the Motorola Edge 20 Pro is available in a single configuration with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage for Rs. 36,999. The colour finishes Midnight Sky and Iridescent Cloud are available.
When it comes to design and some of its characteristics, the Motorola Edge 20 Pro is quite similar to its younger sister, the Motorola Edge 20. First, let’s have a look at the design. The new Edge 20 Pro sports a large 6.7-inch AMOLED display on the front with a tall 20:9 aspect ratio. Because this smartphone is slim and tall, it’s simple to handle in one hand, although reaching the top of the display with a thumb requires swiping the phone.
This AMOLED display features a full-HD+ resolution, a 144Hz refresh rate, and a 576Hz maximum touch sampling rate. If all of this sounds familiar, it’s because the Motorola Edge 20 has similar display specs. Corning Gorilla Glass 5 is used on both the front and back of the Edge 20 Pro, which is a unique feature.
The Edge 20 Pro’s midframe is comprised of an aluminium alloy with a resin covering, according to Motorola. It has a shiny appearance, but it doesn’t feel very high-end. On the right, along with the volume controls, Motorola has included a side-mounted fingerprint scanner. In-display fingerprint scanners are available on competitors such as the OnePlus 9R (Review). On the left side of the Motorola Edge 20 Pro is a dedicated Google Assistant button. This phone doesn’t have a 3.5mm headphone jack, but it does include a USB Type-C connector, a loudspeaker, and a SIM tray on the bottom, and a secondary microphone on the top.
The triple camera arrangement on the rear has a 108-megapixel main camera, an 8-megapixel telephoto camera with 5X magnification and optical image stabilisation, and a 16-megapixel ultra-wide angle camera with macro capabilities. This phone includes a 32-megapixel selfie camera in the hole punch on the front for selfies. The camera module of the Edge 20 protrudes more than this one.
The Edge 20 Pro is somewhat thicker than the Edge 20 (albeit not by much), which might be due to its larger 4,500mAh battery. In the packaging, Motorola has included a 30W TurboPower charger. The Edge 20 Pro I had had a Midnight Sky device with a matte finish on the rear panel. The Edge 20 Pro is IP52 certified, thus it should be splash-proof.
Connectivity options on the Motorola Edge 20 Pro
The Motorola Edge 20 Pro has Bluetooth 5.1, Wi-Fi 6, NFC, dual 5G connection (with support for 11 5G bands), and 4G VoLTE as connectivity options. It also works with five different satellite navigation systems.
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 SoC powers the Motorola Edge 20 Pro, which features 8GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 128GB of UFS 3.1 storage. While the Edge 20 Pro is only available in one configuration in India, I believe there is potential in the market for a 12GB RAM, 256GB storage model.
Motorola Edge 20 Pro V/S OnePlus 9R
Motorola’s MyUX interface is layered on top of Android 11. On the Edge 20 Pro, Moto offers two years of software updates. The September Android security patch was installed on my test device. With a few tweaks, the Edge 20 Pro’s UI seems almost identical to pure Android. Apart from Facebook and a few Google applications, this smartphone had no additional bloatware preloaded. The user interface is simple to use and will appeal to Android purists.
After spending some time with the Motorola Edge 20 Pro, I can state that it offers good value for money. Its simple software makes it easy to operate, and it might be a suitable option to the OnePlus 9R in the long run.
