Bhupendra Patel, a senior BJP official and former Chief Minister Anandiben Patel’s protege, would succeed Vijay Rupani as Gujarat’s Chief Minister. While he was named the legislature party’s head following a meeting, it is widely assumed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister Amit Shah chose him.
Mr Rupani, who was present at the event, backed the incoming Chief Minister, stating that under his leadership, the party will “successfully contest the polls.” Gujarat will hold elections next year.
Mr Patel, the MLA from Ghatlodia, which had previously been held by Anandiben Patel, appeared to be an unexpected choice for the position.
The names of two Union ministers from Gujarat, Mansukh Mandaviya and Parshottam Rupala, the notorious Lakshadweep administrator Praful Khoda Patel, and state agricultural minister RC Faldu have been circulating ahead of today’s legislative party meeting.
Mr Patel worked for the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation as well as the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority.
